Description
Anastrozole Tablets USP is a medication primarily used in the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It is an aromatase inhibitor that works by blocking the enzyme aromatase, which is responsible for converting androgens into estrogen in the body. Since some types of breast cancer are fueled by estrogen, lowering the level of this hormone helps to slow or stop the growth of the cancer cells.
Anastrozole is commonly used as an adjuvant therapy following surgery or radiation to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence, and it can also be used for the treatment of advanced breast cancer. The typical dosage is 1 mg once daily, taken orally with or without food.
Common side effects include hot flashes, joint pain, fatigue, and an increased risk of osteoporosis due to the reduction in oestrogen levels. Regular monitoring, including bone density scans, is recommended during treatment to manage potential side effects.
